PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Members,

We had nearly 20 members join us on Wednesday October 21 for our Decision Making Models, Budgets, and Biases.  Richard “Gus” Gustafson, Professor of Practice, CFO Academy, and National Defense University, explained how decisions and supporting decision makers is not just “about the numbers.”    Our meeting began at 5 p.m. with Financial Statement Analysis, with a full table of 8 (traffic is so much better earlier!), 6 p.m. networking, our bountiful Prime Rib Dinner, and the 7 pm presentation!  A great send off from our Holiday Inn Rosslyn location!

Please consider attending our next Government Contractor Breakfast, Tuesday, November 10 when our speaker will address the topic "Act Like You Have CAS-Covered Contracts – Disclosing Your Practices May Set Your Business Apart" (see details at our http://www.imanationscapital.org/ website and calendar).  The breakfast is held at the Tower Club, 8000 Towers Crescent Drive, Suite 1700, Tysons, VA 22182.  Please check the 17th Floor receptionist to find our room, and get your parking validated (http://www.clubcorp.com/Clubs/The-Tower-Club-Tysons-Corner).

Our next dinner event will be Wednesday December 9 at the UMUC Largo Academic Center, 1616 McCormick Drive, Upper Marlboro MD (exit 17A off the Beltway).  Bus service for your arrival is available from the Largo Town Center or New Carrollton as you may prefer.  Perhaps we can carpool back to metro as needed, or catch the last bus.  We plan a late afternoon start, at 4 p.m. for Table Topics, and then a 5 p.m. networking with our Ledo Pizza ‘buffet’.  The official program, Income Tax Planning – Views and Perspectives, begins at 5:30 p.m. and concludes at 6:30 p.m.  We can conclude the evening with networking, or enjoy the early adjournment!

Many will recall we met at the UMUC Largo Academic Center last December!  As we look past the wintery weather of January we plan our first 2016 event in February, again at the UMUC Largo.  We value your input so please, if you have an idea for a location or topic, please contact us!

Our chapter is one of the largest and we benefit from the diversity of our members!  Add to this the resources of our geographic location and we have many possibilities!

Click on our IMA National Links and reach out to the world with Webinars and Resources! http://imanationscapital.org/ includes a calendar of events in the left column and “About IMA” in the upper right horizontal menu.

This month’s Strategic Finance topics includes a feature on Ethics and Earnings Management at Toshiba, from 2008 through 2015.  http://sfmagazine.com/post-entry/october-2015-toshibas-toxic-culture/  The Tone at the Top, a key concept for Internal Control and Ethics, is evident throughout the process, as pressure to deliver profits and meet targets led to the start of a series of deceptive recording and reporting.  See something, say something and the concept of whistleblowing might have resulted in earlier discovery and resolution.  The hope to ‘recover’ in the next year was a continuing plan, from one company president administration to the next.

Like Back to the Future our paths are changing.  The IOT Internet of Things is here!  IMA’s Strategic Finance Magazine features examples this month   http://sfmagazine.com/post-entry/october-2015-the-future-of-the-internet-of-things/  While we may delay upgrading our connections when we do the future is here!  We are connected!  These are examples of the authoritative leading edge reporting in the monthly Strategic Finance Magazine and its web site!

Please encourage membership in our IMA and promote the CMA certification program, beginning with the CMA exam.  Our area chapters sponsor the Washington School for exam preparation.  See http://imanationscapital.org/Events/CMA_program.htm  as one option.  With planning and preparation the CMA is very attainable!

CMA Record Growth in Fiscal Year 2015

For the fifth straight year, IMA announced significant growth of its flagship certification, the Certified Management Accountant (CMA).  The announcement was made at IMA's October 24 Global Board of Director's meeting, held in Colorado Springs, Colo.  In Fiscal Year 2015, more than 3,500 new professionals earned the CMA credential, the highest number in any fiscal year, representing a 17% increase over last year.  These figures validate the CMA as the most significant management accountant credential in the U.S. and demonstrate continued support of individuals working in progressive management accounting roles, as well as consulting and advisory service professionals.

If you do not have your CMA yet, you have a perfect opportunity to earn it.  The CMA School of Washington's CMA1 online classes begin this month on November 5.  See links in the Upcoming Events List and at the bottom of this newsletter to get more information about how to register for that course.  Invest in your future career potential--become a CMA!
