Sharkey, CPA, MST, will provide an interesting update, concluding by 6:30 p.m. We end our evening with networking, or enjoy the early adjournment!

As 2016 begins we will announce future meetings and events!  Please consider attending our next Government Contractor Breakfast, Tuesday, January 12.  Darrell M. Accounting Most Likely to be Subsumed by Automation

Did you see the article in Strategic Technotes this month on this subject?  It quoted some research in the UK, which indicated that the probability of "vocational extinction" for accountants is 95%.  The researchers arrived at this conclusion because the work accountants do involves content and products that are objective and analytical.  These are skills that an intelligent robot may be able to do better than you can some day.  How do you like those odds?  If you are nearing the end of your career, you might not care so much.  But students and those accountants and finance professionals in the early and middle years of their careers might want to pay attention!

The big question is what can you do about it?  The researchers point out some factors that may make your job less susceptable to automation.  These included negotiation skills, helping and assisting others, and coming up with original ideas.  In other words, focus on building skills and competencies that cannot be easily automated. Keep up with the latest technological advances.  Learn to use the technological tools you have to their fullest capability.  This will free your time to focus on tasks requiring creative and social intelligence, and help you win the race against technological advancement.
