PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Members,

Thank you for your continuing support! Our Table Topics on Financial Statement Analysis (Starbucks!) in August was very popular, with a full table of ten! The official program began with dinner at 6:30 p.m... We nearly met our goal of 20 members in attendance. Comments included lighter traffic when arriving for 5 pm and the benefit of 2 CPEs versus only 1 with the later start but, as noted, half of our group preferred that option! Our CPE presentation on Fraud, Ethics, and Accountants, by Joe Grandinetti, was well received.

This month’s Strategic Finance article features The Fraud Triangle as a starting point in Fraud Detection and Deterrence. Check out the http://sfmagazine.com/post-entry/overcoming-the-fraud-triangle/ feature!

Thank you, everyone, for your encouragement and support of our third annual picnic on August 30th at Hains Point in Washington, DC. We had 22 adults, two students, plus seven kids under 10 for 31 total attendees. We had just enough food, and the weather was better than ever! The two families who attended truly appreciated this family friendly event. Please, plan on attending next year! 12 noon start; end by 3 p.m. Easy parking!

Options! We have many options!

  • Wednesday September 16, is our monthly dinner meeting, offering 2 CPEs, with 5 p.m. Table Topics on Government Financial Statements, 6:30 p.m. Dinner and a 7 p.m. presentation by Stephen G. Wills, CMA, CPA, a Program Analyst at Department of Justice and Adjunct Professor at the University of Maryland University College / UMUC. Stephen will present key changes affecting financial reporting for State and Local Governments, GASB 74 & 75: Will it break the State and Local Piggy Bank???? Plan to join us as we consider the accounting issues and the effect on tax rates!

  • We know many of you will join us on Saturday October 17 for the IMA Ethics Seminar. 2 CPEs. Following the 7 a.m. breakfast, the program begins at 8 a.m. and concludes by 10 a.m. For $25 this is an excellent value and on point for your CMA!

We look forward to continuing long standing traditions and making new ones. Please tell us how to best meet your needs! Our Board of Directors is here for you!

Please encourage membership in our IMA and promote the CMA certification program, beginning with the CMA exam. With planning and preparation the CMA is very attainable!

Looking forward to all our points of intersection!

Kathleen

GLOBAL BOARDROOM NOTES

A meeting of IMA’s Global Board of Directors was held on June 20 in Los Angeles.  The meeting was preceded by a day of training on June 19.  The training session was designed primarily to bring those members who would be joining the Board in July up to speed on Board policies and procedures, as well as to provide an opportunity for them to get acquainted with their fellow directors and IMA staff.

The meeting began with a status report on IMA’s operations and finances through the end of May.  The operating margin for the period reflected a positive variance to budget.  The detailed analysis revealed some interesting trends, including a shift in revenues from dues to CMA programs and strong growth in international membership, driven by the CMA program.  The organization’s total membership as of May 31 stood at 77,472; the goal of 80,000 members is expected to be reached by the end of the summer.

As this was the last Board meeting of the fiscal year, staff and committee chairs presented updates on a number of programs that were initiated during the year, including:

• The IMA Accounting Honor Society (IAHS), officially launched on March 2

• The Higher Education Endorsement Program, recognizing business curricula that meet IMA’s quality educational standards

• The Strategic Finance magazine redesign that was rolled out with the March issue, and the new SFmagazine.com website

I will serve on the Performance Oversight and Audit Committee during the coming year, and was appointed to chair the Investment Subcommittee.

ACE15, IMA’s 96th Annual Conference and Exposition, began the following day, with almost 1,000 in attendance.  Highlights of the 3½ day event included keynote addresses by Stephen J. Dubner, the award-winning author, journalist, radio and TV personality, and co-author of the books Freakonomics and SuperFreakonomics, and Lynn Brewer, one of the Enron whistleblowers.  Ben Mulling, Chief Financial Officer of TENTE Casters, Inc., was introduced as the IMA Chair for 2015-16.  For the third year I hosted a round-table discussion entitled What's Next-- Is There (Accounting) Life After Retirement?   I also served as moderator for two other sessions.  The final speaker of the conference, Jerry Greenfield, gave us a first-hand account of a small business with a social conscience and a sense of humor that became a phenomenal success— beginning with meeting his future business partner, Ben Cohen, in junior high school, through opening up an ice cream parlor in a converted gas station in Burlington, Vermont, and culminating in the 2000 sale of Ben & Jerry’s Homemade, Inc. to Unilever.  Needless to say, the break following Mr. Greenfield’s talk, featuring product sampling, was one of the more popular events of the Conference.

Please contact me at FPHomburger@AOL.com with your comments, questions, or suggestions—I am YOUR representative on the IMA Global Board!
