President's Message

Dear Members,

Welcome to 2016! Our IMA connections offer many resources including the Strategic Finance Magazine, featuring the practicality of our FASB framework http://sfmagazine.com/post-entry/january-2016-book-review-the-fasbs-process/  As knowledge professionals knowing our value and building continuous improvement is key to success as explained at the IMA Strategic Finance Magazine article http://sfmagazine.com/post-entry/january-2016-the-hidden-value-in-your-intangible-assets/.

Locally, members are encouraged to attend and promote our Government Contractor Breakfasts at the Tower Club in Tyson Corner!  Our Nation’s Capital Chapter unites professionals and topics from stakeholders to create value such as the January 12 topic on “Defense Contract Audit Agency Overview and FY 2016 Goals.”  Please visit our web site for information on our next event:  http://imanationscapital.org/

Our monthly meetings resume with a special IMA focus on “Creating Value for Stakeholders” Wednesday January 27 at UMUC Largo Academic Center, 1616 McCormick Drive, Largo, MD 20774.  From the Capital Beltway (I-495/95), merge on to Landover Road/Road/MD-202 via exit 17A toward Upper Marlboro. Proceed in right lane, then turn right on McCormick Drive. Proceed approximately one-fourth of a mile to  1616 McCormick Drive on the right.

We will begin with the 4 p.m. table topics focusing on financial statement analysis, ending at 5 pm. At 5:30 p.m. our official 2nd credit hour CPE program will feature the resources of the IMA as they relate to “Creating Value for Stakeholders”.  Similar to our December meetings (this year and last year) I will serve as the speaker for the evening.  Please plan to join us and bring your questions for discussion!  We had a very lively group in December!

As we look forward to Spring 2016 we will return to the Rosslyn Holiday Inn for the 4th Wednesday of the month dinner meetings, concluding with the Presidents’ Dinner on April 27 at the Rosslyn Holiday Inn.  Our other Spring 2016 dates include Wednesday February 24 and March 23 (a few days before  Easter).

Similar to last year, we will not have meetings in May or June, resuming our Wednesday tradition in July for 2016/2017 IMA Program year.

Please contact me whenever questions or opportunities arise!

Sincerely,

Kathleen

Call for 2016/2017 NCC Board Volunteers and Nominees

Our chapter board of directors includes at a minimum the following positions: a President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Vice President of Membership.

Other optional positions include, but are not limited to: President-elect, Vice President of Communications, Vice President of Professional Education, Director-at-Large,  Director of Academics, Director of CMA Program, Director of Young Professionals, Director of Special Activities, Director of Member Attendance,  Director of Public Relations, Webmaster, Student Chapter Liaison, and Council Liaison.

All board members must be IMA members in good standing.  The chapter board of directors is responsible for the management and successful operation of the chapter. Responsibilities include: planning, coordinating, communicating, and conducting chapter activities to provide high-level service to chapter members.  The board usually meets at least four times a year.  Currently these meetings occur immediately after a chapter dinner meeting.

If you are interested in serving as a chapter board member for 2016/2017, or if you would like to nominate someone to serve, please contact our Nominating Committee by sending an e-mail to president@imanationscapital.org.  Many new board members join as a member of a committee or the board at large to learn more about our governance and consider other positions in subsequent years based on their interests and availability.  Volunteering to serve on the chapter board is an excellent way to build leadership skills in a supportive environment.  Our chapter board commonly includes a lot of former chapter and council Presidents who are willing assist and mentor new board members.

    Tentative nominating process:

    • The nominating committee will accept volunteers and nominations up until our February dinner meeting.  At that evening's board meeting they will present the proposed candidates to the current board of directors.
    • The current board of directors, once they approve the nominations, will present nominations for chapter election at our March dinner meeting.
    • The chapter Secretary will submit the list of elected officers to IMA Global headquarters by the end of March.
    • The new board will serve the chapter from July 1, 2016 - June 30, 2017

    Innovation

Earlier this month, IMA's CEO, Jeff Thomson, CMA, CAE, posted a new Moments That Matter at https://imaleadership.wordpress.com/ discussing this topic.  In this article he poses three questions about innovation, and gives some sage advice about driving home innovation in your organization to produce business success.  Check it out!

In September, the IMA Strategic Finance Magazine published an article about Advancing Innovation: What's Your Role (http://sfmagazine.com/post-entry/september-2015-advancing-innovation-whats-your-role/).  In this article the author discussed how good governance can make the difference in implementing effective innovation.  He also introduced an Innovation Value Score (IVS), which uses a balanced scorecard (BCS) framework to help accountants and finance professionals analyze, measure, and drive the creation of innovation value.

For more on innovation and innovation governance and measurement, see Advancing Innovation: Galvanizing, Enabling & Measuring for Innovation Value! a new book (both print and e-book formats) available in the IMA store at www.imanet.org/IVS.
