President's Message

Dear Members,

Thank you, everyone, for your continuing support! Our monthly meetings in Largo, Maryland, concluded on January 27 with a special IMA focus on “Creating Value for Stakeholders.” This provided an excellent networking event, complete with a winter BBQ! The event united our student, early career, and professional experience perspectives, reviewing financial reports for companies of interest during Table Topics, and, for the official program, exploring the resources and impact of IMA locally, nationally, and internationally!

We hope you can join us on Wednesday Feb 24 for our presentation on Internal Controls.  "Tone at the Top" is a key communication strategy in Internal Control.   Emerging Issues serves as our framework!  Our return to the Rosslyn Holiday Inn and easy Metro Access should be a great start to our spring season (why wait!).

  • February 24 Dinner Meeting, Rosslyn Holiday Inn …. Please make your RSVP and join the conversation about "Tone at the Top!"
  • Our 5 p.m. Table Topics returns to the SEC 10-K with a focus on the Management Discussion and Analysis area.  We will discuss the threats and opportunities related to Required Disclosure and Competitive Advantage Strategy.  The SEC 10-K serves many purposes including competitor analysis, new business development, and business reflection.  An additional goal of the table topics sessions is to encourage student and early career members to join us as we all learn from each other!

Our IMA connections offer many resources including the Strategic Finance Magazine   Topics featured this month include communication, leadership, and the concepts of ‘worry’ and risk avoidance!

Locally, members are encouraged to attend and promote our Government Contractor Breakfasts at the Tower Club in Tyson Corner!  Our Nation’s Capital Chapter unites professionals and topics from stakeholders to create value as topics are explored and discussed. Please consider joining us at our next Tyson’s Corner morning event!  Please visit our web site for information on our next event on March 8:

As we look forward to Spring 2016 we will continue at the Rosslyn Holiday Inn for the 4th Wednesday of the month dinner meetings on March 23 and concluding with the Presidents’ Dinner & Elections on April 27.  Similar to last year, we will not have meeting in May or June, resuming our Wednesday tradition in July for 2016/2017 IMA Program year.

Please consider joining our chapter Board of Directors by sending an email to The Board of Directors is a combination of elected and appointed members with an annual election each spring! We plan to present a slate for consideration in our March newsletter and to complete the election process at our Wednesday March 23 meeting.

Please contact me whenever questions or opportunities arise!

Call for 2016/2017 NCC Board Volunteers and Nominees

If you are interested in serving as a chapter board member for 2016/2017, or if you would like to nominate someone to serve, please contact our Nominating Committee by sending an e-mail to

Our chapter board of directors includes at a minimum the following positions: a President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Vice President of Membership.

Other optional positions include, but are not limited to: President-elect, Vice President of Communications, Vice President of Professional Education, Director-at-Large,  Director of Academics, Director of CMA Program, Director of Young Professionals, Director of Special Activities, Director of Member Attendance,  Director of Public Relations, Webmaster, Student Chapter Liaison, and Council Liaison.

All board members must be IMA members in good standing.  The chapter board of directors is responsible for the management and successful operation of the chapter. Responsibilities include: planning, coordinating, communicating, and conducting chapter activities to provide high-level service to chapter members.  The board usually meets at least four times a year.  Currently these meetings occur immediately after a chapter dinner meeting.

Many new board members join as a member of a committee or the board at large to learn more about our governance and consider other positions in subsequent years based on their interests and availability.  Volunteering to serve on the chapter board is an excellent way to build leadership skills in a supportive environment.  Our chapter board commonly includes a lot of former chapter and council Presidents who are willing to assist and mentor new board members.

    Tentative nominating process:

    • The nominating committee will accept volunteers and nominations up until our February dinner meeting (February 24).  At that evening's board meeting they will present the proposed candidates to the current board of directors.
    • The current board of directors, once they approve the nominations, will present nominations for chapter election at our March dinner meeting (March 23).
    • The chapter Secretary will submit the list of elected officers to IMA Global headquarters by the end of March.
    • The new board will serve the chapter from July 1, 2016 - June 30, 2017
